There is a variety of scuba gear to chose from, but remember to chose the the gear that fits the best, are most suitable and comfortable. Do not go diving with anything that you are not comfortable with.
Equipment you will need for diving:
• Mask and snorkel – Your mask is used all the time underwater. If it comes off, or gets filled with water you have to tip your head back and blow out out of your nose. To know if a mask fits you or not you have to push it on, don’t put the strap on, and suck in with your nose. If it doesn’t fall of you can use it, if it does it means it is too small. Usually, you use your snorkel when you are swimming at the surface. If it is filled with water, blow it all out.
• Fins – There are many types of fins: open heel, closed heel, blade, split, snorkeling and freediving. The ones you use for scuba diving are: open heel, closed heel, blade and split. Your instructor will help you find the best one.
• Scuba kit – Your scuba kit is made up of your: BCD (buoyancy control device), regulator, Cylinder and Weight system. You chose it based on your size and what type of dive you will be going on.
Your BCD is used to control your buoyancy under water. That means that it is used to control whether you sink or float. Usually when you are diving, you are trying to achieve neutral buoyancy, which means that you are hovering without neither sinking nor floating up.
Your regulator is what you breath through. It brings high pressured air from your cylinder to your mouth. It reduces the pressure of the air and delivers it only when you breath in.
